Lessons
In our lessons, we teach Horsemanship and Riding, employing a 'from the ground up' system of learning. Safety always comes first, including the proper handling and care of the horses. We are a Hunter-Jumper facility, teaching a form of English-style riding, focused on Hunter Equitation and Jumping.
Private Lessons
All first lessons are a private 1/2 hour lesson. This enables us to evaluate each rider for aptitude and skill level. Each student progresses at their own pace and must reach proficiency in a basic set of riding skills before being moved to a group lesson.
Students may also choose to schedule a private lesson from time to time. It offers the student the opportunity to work on a specific skill, one-on-one with the trainer.
Group Lessons
Group lessons are arranged for students at a comparable skill level. The lessons are one hour long and will not contain more than four students.
Requirements
There is more to riding than the time spent in the saddle. All lessons will involve handling, grooming, tacking, tack care, and riding. Each rider is required to wear a rated riding helmet and paddock boots.
We have several lesson horses, providing a horse for every skill level, beginner to advanced.
Boarding
As a boarder, you and your horse will be provided with:
- a 10' x 10' or 10' x 12' stall, with rubber matting covered in wood shavings
- a trunk and saddle rack, in our heated Boarder's Tack Room
Your horse will receive full service board, including:
- feed (grain) twice daily, mid-day meal where necessary
- hay 4 times daily
- daily turnout, weather permitting
- daily stall cleaning, with additional picking throughout the day
- routine meds and basic first aid, administered by qualified barn staff
Diet customization is available. Supplements may be provided.
We have a farrier who visits the farm regularly. Arrangements may be made to use our farrier or the farrier of your choice. You may also choose to enlist the services of your own vet or the vet used by SHEC.
Training
Training is available on a per-ride basis. Arrangments may be made for longer periods of training, at the trainer's discretion. Training-board packages are also available.
Sales and Leasing
We will gladly help our boarders and students with the selection and purchase, or sale, of a horse.
We provide both half- and full-lease of select lesson horses. We will also help arrange a summer lease of a horse through another facility.
Showing
From lead line on up, riders at SHEC have the opportunity to show in any of several local shows. We also participate in schooling shows with other barns.
Even though we may compete individually, we are a team that works together and helps each other. Students who are not showing are encouraged to help out at the shows.
Clinics
A variety of clinics are arranged throughout the year. This past Fall, we offered a riding clinic, with two visiting instructors, for beginner to advanced level riders. Over Spring break, we brought in specialists for grooming, desensitization, and braiding clinics.
